Ada Lovelace Day Event – Tuesday 14th October

Unsung Heroines of STEM

In line with ALD’s aim to celebrate women in STEM, three of our members gave short talks about Grace Hopper, Anita Borg and Misha Mahowald

Evening social with buffet and speaker – Weds 25th June 2014

Speaker: Ann Kempster talking about the 300 Seconds movement.

Ann Kempster
300 Seconds is a series of lightning talks aimed at encouraging people to practise their public speaking skills in a friendly, safe and supportive environment. They want to encourage new voices in the tech scene, wherever they may come from.

Ann will be talking more about what 300 Seconds is, why it was created, what they’re doing next and how you can get involved.

Ann is Delivery Manager at dxw, a London based agency which makes engaging, smart web projects for the public sector.

She is also an award winning communications professional who worked in the Home Office and the Cabinet Office in her nine years in the Civil Service. She pioneered the use of open source software and was an early advocate of social media in the civil service.

Ann is both co-founder of 300 Seconds as well as CommsCamp, an unconference for public sector comms professionals.

In her spare time, she can usually found with either a camera, book or spatula in hand. Ann is a rabid fan of post-apocalyptic science fiction, the Kent countryside and Vietnamese food.

Discussion topic – Are we leaving it too late to engage girls in STEM subjects?

Some academics don’t bother with STEM engagement events with schoolchildren because it doesn’t result in university applications, they’ll only talk to over-15s. Is that too late? When did you get interested in science or technology?

Family Christmas Event – December 2013

ChristmasPoster
We held a children’s workshop in Newtown Community Hut (Belmont Park) to make these twinkling electronic decorations from Bare Conductive. Even though the weather was foul we had a good turnout and everyone had a great time, some of us even got our decorations working!

Pretty Sweet Bakes provided some amazing cakes for us to try too.
